Some residents of Southend will be returning home this morning, approximately two weeks after being forced to evacuate due to the threat of a nearby wildfire.

The Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation said Sunday, that leadership met to discuss the current situation.

An advisory to residents notes that the fire is contained and not appearing to pose a risk to the community.

Smoke is still affecting air quality in the area.

Busses will begin returning residents housed in hotels in Saskatoon and Prince Albert beginning at 10 AM.

All residents must undergo a rapid COVID-19 screening test prior to getting on the bus.

The rescinding of the mandatory evacuation order is only for the general population.

Residents with health concerns, Elders, children under two years old and those identified as vulnerable will not be going to Southend due to air quality concerns and smoke conditions.

The First Nation said this will be reassessed Wednesday, with current hotel supports still in place.
