Health officials in the northwest are working to contain a COVID-19 outbreak, declared in the Buffalo River Dene Nation community Thursday.

The Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority said the rise in the number of confirmed cases is linked to the community evacuation due to wildfires.

Contact tracing is now underway.

The Sask. Health Authority is alerting the public of an increased risk of COVID-19 in Dillon and La Loche.

It is asking residents to wear masks, maintain social distancing, take preventative measures and get vaccinated.

The SHA said it is restricting visitations at St Joseph’s Health Centre in Ile a La Crosse for Acute Care and Long-Term Care and at the La Loche Health Centre – Acute Care and Long-Term Care to compassionate, end of life care, and critical care situations.

“These limitations will be reviewed in two weeks but will remain in place until it is safe to return to the previous level of family presence. Family members and support people who are permitted must follow SHA guidelines for screening, personal protective equipment and physical distancing,” said the Sask. Health Authority.
