The final refurbishment on the Holy Trinity Church in Lac La Ronge Provincial Park will begin in June, with the painting of the interior and exterior of the historic building.

Mid City Electric in La Ronge and Phoenix Painting of Saskatoon were awarded the $180,000 contract.

“This phase is actually preparation and painting of the full exterior and the full interior of the building to preserve the structure for against weathering and so on,” said Byron Davis, Executive Director of Parks Infrastructure and Capital Planning for Ministry of Parks Culture and Sport. “The preparation includes, sanding down, repairing any damaged materials carefully and repainting the structure.”

Davis explained that the previous work included repairing the stain glass windows and a new roof.

The church is situated on a rocky point on the banks of the Churchill River in Stanley Mission. It was built between 1854 and 1860 as part of an Anglican missionary. It became a National Historic Site in 1970.

“The logistics of getting to the church with scaffolding and equipment is a challenge by boat. But we’re happy to announce that that that upgrading is going to happen this summer,” explained Davis.

Work is to begin in June with completion anticipated in August. Davis said the exterior will remain white, while the interior will be similar to the colours now.
