The City of Regina has started an online public conversation on the future of the Sir John A. Macdonald statue in Victoria Park.

The statue was to be moved into storage while public consultations on its final resting place occurred.

Council voted March 31, on a recommendation that it report to the public by early next year.

“Telling the full story of Macdonald’s legacy and supporting Regina residents in increased understanding is an important part of the City’s responsibilities as an institution engaged in Truth and Reconciliation,” said Mayor Sandra Masters. “As we acknowledge the scars of our community’s past and examine systemic issues still present in our society today, having honest and respectful dialogue enables us to be more informed and empathetic citizens.”

Residents who wish to share their stories are encouraged to at beheard.regina.ca.

The seven-foot bronze statue, which has been vandalized several times in recent years will be in storage for up to 12 months.

The City says the relocation of the statue is to commence sometime this month.

Possible relocation areas include the Legislative Assembly, RCMP Training Center and Government House.
