RCMP has laid a charge in an incident dating back almost 10 years.

In a media release sent out Friday morning Prince Albert RCMP General Investigation Section said they have charged Jody Roberts, 33 of Montreal Lake Cree Nation with failure to remain at the scene of an accident in the death of John Bird.

RCMP said the charge dates back to April of 2011 when they were called to a grid road on the First Nation about an injured man. Bird was pronounced dead at the scene and it was found he had been the victim of a hit and run.

RCMP said they arrested Roberts this week at a residence in Montreal Lake. She made her first court appearance Thursday by phone. She is set to be back in court April 1 in Montreal Lake.

Sgt. Chris Hansen, the officer in charge of the P.A. RCMP General Investigation Section said in the media release the investigation was a challenging one.

“From the onset there were hurdles to overcome in this investigation. Multiple vehicles were examined and determined to be unrelated,” he said.

Sgt. Hansen as well credited Cst. Antal of his section, who was the first officer on the scene of the incident and worked the cases all the way through.

RCMP said 10 different detachments and sections were involved in the investigation, including the La Ronge and P.A. detachments, which assisted the Montreal Lake detachment.
