Sets of hockey equipment that will be distributed to kids in northern Saskatchewan have arrived.

La Ronge RCMP Cpl. Brent Nicol is part of the initiative and he says they were expecting to get the equipment sooner, but the pandemic caused some delays.

“It was supposed to be here in the fall time, but with all the COVID and that, we were just able to get it into town here this week,” said Nicol.

“With all the ice out now, we’re probably not going to be able to do anything with it until the fall time now, but we did get 40 full sets of equipment. Twenty for La Ronge here and 20 for Stanley Mission.”

The NHLPA Goals & Dreams fund provided the equipment and this is the second time gear has made its way to northern Saskatchewan.

“Last year, I was able to obtain 20 sets that were split between La Ronge — on-reserve and in town, La Ronge Minor Hockey,” said Nicol.

Nicol adds that 20 kids in Stanley Mission have already been selected to receive the equipment, while children in a new JRMCC hockey program will benefit from the other sets of gear.
