A man charged with second-degree murder in the death of Jamey Leroy Roberts pleaded guilty on Feb. 4 in La Ronge Provincial Court to the lesser charge of manslaughter.
Kane Lenard Roberts, 26, has been in custody since he was arrested Sept. 27, 2020.
The body of Jamey Roberts, 45, was found after Stanley Mission RCMP were asked to conduct a welfare check on him Sept. 26. Police and health care workers went to his home and found Kane Roberts at the residence. When police were about to enter the home to search for Jamey Roberts, they heard a firearm being loaded so they, and the health workers, retreated to a safe location.
Police secured the area around the home and called the Saskatchewan RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and RCMP Crisis Negotiators to assist. Kane Roberts surrendered to police at about 5:15 a.m. on Sept. 27, 2020.
Police also say evidence gathered during their investigation revealed that he was murdered before the RCMP were contacted. Police seized a firearm inside the home.
Kane Roberts will be sentenced in La Ronge Provincial Court on April 1. Victim impact statements are also expected to be read that day.
