The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations is mourning the loss of Senator Theresa Stevenson.

A release from the organization Tuesday afternoon says Stevenson has passed away.

The late senator created “Chili for Children” in the 1980’s which has fed thousands of Regina families in the decades since.

Stevenson also played an active role in the FSIN’s Women’s Commission and was a tireless advocate for the treaty right to education.

A park in Regina is named after the former senator in recognition of her contributions and leadership in the community.
