A funeral for Saskatchewan Indigenous hockey legend Fred Sasakamoose will take place this coming Saturday.

The 86-year-old Sasakamoose passed away last week after a short battle with COVID-19.

He was one of the first Indigenous players to make it to the NHL playing a handful of games for the Chicago Blackhawks in 1953 and 1954.

The funeral begins at noon in Sasakamoose’s home community of the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation.

It will also be livestreamed on the Fred Sasakamoose “Chief Thunderstick” National Hockey Championship Facebook page.

The master of ceremonies at the funeral service will be Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Chief Bobby Cameron.
