The Piwapan Women’s Centre Sisters in Spirit Walk was held in La Ronge on Sunday.

Organizer Jade Hartley says the walk is part of the effort to raise awareness about missing and murdered Indigenous women in the north.

She says they started at the Lac La Ronge Indian Band office and walked to the urban reserve along La Ronge Avenue.

“The urban reserve is actually located where the residential school sat, it has since been torn down, but that is the grounds, which is used quite frequently for events in the community,” she said.

Hartley says this year they had to make some changes because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the past, they would have t-shirts made to hand out to participants. This year, they made 100 masks, which were distributed to those taking part.

Social distancing was encouraged and registration of participants was done as a safety precaution.
