The La Ronge Ice Wolves kick off training camp today (Friday).
Around 80 players will be in town from across Canada, looking to earn a spot on the 2020-21 edition of the Ice Wolves.
“It’s going to be some tough decisions, but it should be a very competitive camp for the kids coming in to make the La Ronge Ice Wolves,” said Ice Wolves Head Coach and GM Kevin Kaminski.
This year’s training camp will look a bit different compared to past years. The Ice Wolves are holding sessions at the Mel Hegland Uniplex and the JRMCC.
Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, spectator capacity will be limited at both rinks.
Meantime, Kaminski says there will be several local players on the ice this weekend.
“(Chase) Vancoughnett is here, Parker Layton, Cobe Delaney, I think Brandt Fiske is back, I think there might even be a couple more – Alex Bell is coming,” said Kaminski. “La Ronge is getting represented by their own very, very well. Jacob Cossette is coming, so it’s good to have all these local kids attending our camp.”
Training camp runs until Sunday, with the last scrimmage wrapping up at 3:00 p.m. that day at the Mel Hegland Uniplex.
The SJHL is targeting Oct. 9 as the start date for the 2020-21 season, but the league still requires approval from the proper authorities before the puck can drop.
