The La Ronge Ice Wolves are getting a lot of help from the Town of La Ronge.

The town is wiping away the SJHL team’s $20,000 in debt owed to the municipality. Additionally, the town is giving the Ice Wolves free ice time at the Mel Hegland Uniplex for the upcoming season.

“We were very pleasantly surprised,” said Randy Johns, who is a board member with the Ice Wolves. “That’s a real huge contribution for the Ice Wolves for this coming season. It really helps us out a lot.”

Johns estimates the team spends around $12,000 per season on ice fees.

The financial relief from the town is a big boost for the Ice Wolves, who had several fundraising events cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve been really affected by the inability to get out and fundraise,” said Johns. “We missed the end of the season, we were in playoffs there, so that’s always raised a lot of money for the club. There’s other events that we couldn’t have, like the jail and bail and we always raise money at the fair, which was cancelled.”

It’s not clear yet when the 2020-21 SJHL season will begin, but the league is aiming for a Sept. 25 start date.
