The Montreal Lake Cree Nation is in lock-down after a member of that community tested positive for COVID-19.

Chief Frank Roberts addressed his First Nation after Council held an emergency meeting to pass several motions and obtain a public health order authorizing the lock-down.

“So, we did make some motions and one of the motions that we made was that we’ll be going into a total lock-down of our community. That’s our borders. And that will become effective Friday evening July 10 at 8pm to July 24 at 8pm,” said Roberts.

The identity of the person infected with the virus is not revealed. Contact tracing has been conducted and Roberts said those contacted are mandated to self-isolate during the lock-down to help stop the spread of the virus.

People are allowed to leave the community, to isolate at a remote cabin or for other travel plans, but will not be permitted to re-enter until the lock-down is complete.

Public access to government services and offices will be closed during this time, yet some essential services will be made available through appointment only.

Roberts encourages residents to either stay at home or close to home during the lock-down. Masks are mandatory at the general store.

Public gatherings are cancelled. Wakes and funerals are permitted, but restricted to 10 people in attendance inside and outside the church.

Roberts said that physical distancing and sanitization practices must be adhered to. The First Nation will be providing PPE’s and hand sanitizer to funeral and wake attendees.
