La Ronge RCMP are advising the public to beware of an increase in fraudulent phone scams looking for gift cards.

According to a press release, it appears at times the scammers are impersonating RCMP officers and making threats requesting money transfers, gift cards, use of crypto currencies or Bitcoin.

Mounties say under no circumstances should residents give out personal information such as social insurance numbers over the phone or transfer money to anyone that appears suspicious.

If a call sounds suspicious, police are asking residents to record as much information as possible and contact La Ronge RCMP at (306) 425-6730.

Fraudulent phone calls can also be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CFAC) at 1-888-495-8501 or www.antifraudcentre.ca.
