Gordon Denny Community School students are able to purchase nutritional snacks starting this week.

Parents and guardians can go to Giant Tiger in La Ronge to purchase food from Wednesday to Saturday.

The school is providing up to $50 for each student.

Gordon Denny is using funding originally slated for its nutrition program to allow families to buy their own food and snacks.

As students are unable to have their daily snacks at the school due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the school saw this as an opportunity to use existing resources to ensure students still get nutritional meals.

Principal Scott Hepworth said the idea is for the school to help students get healthy meals, even if it’s now being done from a distance.

“We want to serve and provide for families,” he said. “And we wanted to provide nutrition for kids. Not only that but we wanted to make sure that we did it in a safe way for everybody and in a way that’s accessible for everybody.”

Certain food will not be paid for by the school.

Hepworth said things like chips, pop and candy are excluded because these food items are not considered nutritional.

“We’re encouraging families to purchase things that will help their kids grow, and for a healthy body and a healthy mind.”

While the students learn from a distance, Hepworth said the school hopes they can still get required nutrition.

“Not only do we want to provide good food for kids to help them learn, but this program ensures our social connectivity with our students and families at this difficult time and when we’re physically apart. We want them to know that we’re still with them and still working for them.”
