About 400 people were on hand in Prince Albert on Friday night to take part in this year’s Métis Nation Inspirational Gala.

The event recognizes Métis people who have made significant contributions over the course of the past year.

Chief Jon Bergen, who was at the event, said Métis people are a big part of the Prince Albert Police Service.

“To be a diverse police service is part of our brand and we really work toward reflecting our community because the police are the community and the community are the police,” he said. “That’s a key principle from many, many years ago to the foundation of policing.”

Métis Nation-Saskatchewan Western Region Two Area Director Sherry McLennan said Métis people need to be acknowledged for all they give back to the community.

“Well I feel that our Métis people need to be acknowledged for the work that they do and they don’t get the credit that they go out every day – police officers, healthcare workers, education, all these people,” she said.

The event was hosted by Western Region Two at Plaza 88 Event Centre.

This is the second year it has taken place.
