The Kawacatoose First Nation is speaking out about an oil spill last week in southern Saskatchewan.

On Dec. 9, a Canadian Pacific train derailment near Lanigan resulted in the spilling of about 1.5 million litres of crude oil.

In a press release, Kawacatoose Chief Tom Dustyhorn says the First Nation is concerned about the effects the spill is having on the local environment including wildlife, plants and the underground water supply.

He says neither CP Rail nor the federal government has reached out to his community in the week since the spill happened.

Also, in the release, Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Chief Bobby Cameron says it is important local First Nations are consulted on any environmental impacts and clean-up efforts going forward.

He says a number of Indigenous people continue to practice their treaty rights and harvest in the area.

The Kawacatoose First Nation is located in the Treaty 4 territory near Raymore.
