After receiving what it describes as security threats to staff from some patrons, the Alex Robertson Library in La Ronge is on reduced hours.

Until further notice, the library will close at 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and be closed on Saturday.

All after school programming has also been cancelled for the time being.

Michelle Gale is the library’s chairperson.

“There’s a group of young people who are making it extremely difficult to operate the Alex Robertson Public Library safely and effectively,” she said. “And until the library board and administration, as a team, feel confident that they’ve implemented the measures that they can into ensuring a safe environment for staff and patrons, the library will remain operating with reduced hours and no after school programming.”

In an emailed statement, the La Ronge RCMP says it has investigated in the past week the “behaviour of a number of patrons on library grounds and is working with management to prevent further incidents from occurring.”

No charges have been laid thus far.

Gale says the library has been dealing with the problem for a number of weeks.

The library is normally open until 5:30 p.m. Mondays and Fridays and until 8 p.m. Tuesdays to Thursdays.

The library is also normally open 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.

It will still open at the regular time of 10 a.m. Monday through Friday.
