The external examination into how the RCMP investigated the Colten Boushie death is expected to conclude by the end of this year.

“The CRCC expects to complete its Chair-Initiated Complaint and Public Interest Investigation into the RCMP’s investigation of the death of Colten Boushie by the end of this calendar year and provide this report to the RCMP,” said Civilian Review and Complaints Commission spokesperson Kate McDerby.

“Once this report has been reviewed by the RCMP, the RCMP Commissioner responds in writing, identifying which recommendations the RCMP will act on. If no action is to be taken, the Commissioner must provide reasons.”

Members of Boushie’s family initially launched the complaint in March 2018 after they felt the actions of the RCMP officers portrayed them as suspects and believed it was inappropriate how officers informed Debbie Baptiste on her son’s death and comes after the RCMP in 2017 cleared officers of any wrong doing.

The Civilian Review and Complaints Commission independently investigated the conduct of RCMP members involved in this incident and whether their actions followed RCMP policy, practice and training.

Boushie was shot and killed in August 2016 on Gerald Stanley’s Biggar-area farm Stanley was found not guilty at trial.

“Once the RCMP Commissioner’s response has been received, the CRCC will prepare and release a Final Report (which includes the CRCC’s investigation and the RCMP response). This report will be posted to the CRCC’s website,” explained McDerby.

The Boushie family is suing both the RCMP and Gerald Stanley for $2 million is damages.
