Court heard Friday that expenditures by the Fond du Lac Denesuline First Nation during Napoleon Mercredi’s time as chief, from 2009 to 2011, were not always properly recorded by the Prince Albert Grand Council.

Mercredi is on trial for misappropriation of more than $400,000 in band funds during his time as chief.

However, under cross-examination from defence lawyer Garth Bendig, PAGC Director of Finance Gene Der admitted Fond du Lac expenditures that should have been logged under accounts receivable were sometimes recorded as economic development spending.

Accounts receivable is a line of credit PAGC member bands have with the tribal council.

The trial also heard chiefs of the twelve member PAGC First Nations receive a roughly $30,000 allowance that can be used to purchase items like vehicles for personal use.

Mercredi is accused of using more than $25,000 in economic development transfers from PAGC to purchase a Ford Expedition from Lakeland Ford in 2011.

The trial, taking place at Prince Albert Court of Queen’s Bench, continues next week.
