A candlelight vigil for World Suicide Prevention Day was held at St. Alban’s Cathedral in Prince Albert on Tuesday night.

Those in attendance had the chance to light candles for someone they knew who has committed suicide or for someone who they know who has considered suicide.

Sheryl Kimbley is a member of the Big River First Nation and gave a presentation at the event.

“We are losing our people at a ridiculous rate,” Kimbley said. “There is no time limit on hurt. Everybody needs to take steps to make sure that something is done. We all need to pitch in. We can all do something. We can’t leave it in the hands of the politicians.”

World Suicide Prevention Day takes place annually on Sept. 10.

“There’s been improvement because we’re seeing devastation and people are crying out for ways to help and crying out to be helped,” Kimbley added. “I think the awareness is getting better, but we need more volunteers and we need more action. We need to help each other. There is hope.”

Prince Albert singer-songwriter LJ Tyson also sang Lady Gaga’s “Joanne” at the event.
