A house fire on the Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation Sunday afternoon has claimed the life of one person.

RCMP confirm it is investigating the fire as suspicious and is being assisted by the Coroner’s service.

“The RCMP and Saskatchewan Coroner are on-site and continuing a preliminary investigation. The location around the residence has been cordoned off and I am asking individuals to avoid the area around Dodgies Convenience Store and directly across Willow Cree Health Services,” said Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation Councillor Kevin Seesequasis in a statement.

Seesequasis said that the RCMP Major Crimes Unit and the Forensic Identification Section have begun their investigations.

The identity of the deceased is not being released.

“I am asking members of the BOCN to refrain from any speculation and posting on social media,” requested Seesequasis.

Police are not releasing any further details.
