A First Nations entrepreneur is trying to unseat incumbent Conservative Andrew Sheer to represent the Regina-Qu’Appelle riding in the House of Commons.

Jordan Ames-Sinclair of the Zagime Anishinabek formally the Sakimay First Nation is running a campaign focused on better representing the voters.

He said he wants to give a voice back to the community and restore trust and communication between voters and the federal government.

He said the constituency has not had adequate representation in 15 years.

Ames-Sinclair said it’s important for Indigenous people to vote so they are represented in federal policy decisions.

“These decisions made in Ottawa are often times made without an Indigenous perspective. So, it’s important to elect Indigenous people to Ottawa and that way things being discussed on Parliament floor are actually done with an Indigenous perspective,” explained Ames-Sinclair.

Ames-Sinclair’s grandmother is a member of the Little Black Bear First Nation.

“The important thing is, is that Indigenous people get out and vote. I’ve had many conversations with people who say this is not my election, or feel this isn’t something that concerns me. And I’d say I have to disagree with you. It is so important that Indigenous people get out and vote,” Ames Sinclair said.
