La Ronge will host the JRMCC Men’s Fastball Tournament this weekend.

The action is taking place at the JRMCC Sports Grounds, with things kicking off Friday and wrapping up Sunday.

“We started this last year and we want to continue to host this event – and try to promote the game here in the north,” said Kevin Roberts, an organizer with the event. “It is very popular in some of the southern communities and some of the cities. Saskatoon has a good league going and we are just trying to promote the game more in northern Saskatchewan.”

Nine teams have registered for the event. The Black Lake Warriors, Canoe Lake Jays and La Ronge 89ers are just some of the clubs vying for the championship.

Meantime, Roberts also says there’s a good chunk of change on the line for the top three teams.

“There’s $6,500 in guaranteed cash payouts,” said Roberts. “First place is $3,300, second is $2,100 and third place is $1,100, so for a $300 entry fee at nine teams, that’s a pretty good payout.”

The final is slated for 3:45 p.m. on Sunday.
