Nominations are now open for the SaskTel Indigenous Youth Awards of Excellence.

The awards recognize the accomplishments of students of First Nations, Metis, or Inuit descent between the ages of 14-18.

There are 10 award categories which include leadership, education, culture, and community service.

The awards ceremony will take place on May 24 at TCU Place in Saskatoon.

“Our goal is to create opportunities for Indigenous youth to become the leaders for tomorrow,” awards chair Colleen Cameron says.

Nominations will be accepted until April 15.

Anyone can nominate deserving individuals except for the parents of the nominees.

The awards date back to 1997 and were established by the Wicihitowin Foundation.

“We just really want to support youth and let them know that they are cherished,” Cameron says. “These awards are so important. It’s a wonderful feeling to bring these exceptional young people together to celebrate their successes and honour the integrity they bring to their schools and community.”
