La Ronge was the site of the 19th annual Aboriginal Provincial Broomball Championships this past weekend at the JRMCC.

When all of the dust settled, the La Ronge Snipers took home the gold medal following a 4-1 win over the Hall Lake Hitmen.

“It was a great event, it was exciting and fun,” said Leonard Isbister, who is with the event. “We had a young group from Beardy’s and Okemasis come up, they were kind of young, but we allowed them to enter and they were a joy to have.”

Meantime, the JRMCC Braves earned the bronze medal. The action took place on Saturday and Sunday in northern Saskatchewan and featured rosters made up of female and male competitors.

Isbister says they would like to host the event again.

“We’re hoping to put a bid in for next year again, since broomball is big in La Ronge and it’s not really going anywhere in the other communities,” said Isbister. “Would like to keep it here and have more teams next year.”
