The 36th annual Don Allen Saskaloppet cross-country ski event gets underway on Friday in La Ronge.

Over 200 skiers are expected to take part in the action. In addition to Saskatchewan athletes, there’s even competitors expected to come from other provinces.

“We will have people coming from Regina, Prince Albert — Herbert, Saskatchewan in the southwest corner, Saskatoon, we have schools coming, people coming from across the north,” said Dorothy Looyestein, the chairperson for the event. “I believe we have individuals coming from Ontario and Alberta.”

There’s a wide range of various races. New for this year is a two-kilometre race.

“It will start and finish out at the Nut Point campground,” said Looyestein. “It will take place on the Nut Point trails.”

The action concludes on Saturday.
