It was a big medal haul for northern Saskatchewan athletes at the recent Special Olympics Saskatchewan 2019 Winter Games in Regina.

In total, 12 medals were won by northern competitors.

Kelly Haydukewich is a coach for the northern district team and he says it was a great experience for the athletes.

“When they go to these things, they see a lot of people that they only see at these games,” said Haydukewich.

“It’s really nice to see the relationships and friendships that they develop. Three of them had been to the games before and you could see them reacquainting themselves with the other athletes.”

Devotion McKenzie of La Ronge won two gold medals in cross-country skiing, while Katie Clarke (Stony Rapids, Matthew McKenzie (Air Ronge) and Tyler Tsannie (La Ronge) all earned at least three medals in snowshoeing.

Meanwhile, the games take place every four years.
