Saskatchewan’s Child and Youth Advocate says he unequivocally supports First Nations reclaiming complete control of their own child welfare system.

“I believe that we as First Nations people have the education, knowledge, skills and abilities to love, care for, and teach our own children and youth, but most importantly I believe that we have the inherent right to be in complete control of our own child welfare system.” said O’Soup.

O’Soup is echoing comments made by Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Vice-Chief David Pratt that First Nations are more than capable of caring for their own children.

O’Soup says he has complete confidence in the 17 First Nation Child and Family Services agencies across the province to care for First Nations children.

Following the Sixties Scoop apology last Monday by Premier Scott Moe, the FSIN called for a moratorium on First Nations adoptions.
