“The parents are scared, the family is scared,” said Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson following a shooting at a home on the reserve Sunday evening.
RCMP say the shooting left a five-year-old boy with serious but non-life-threatening injuries after a bullet penetrated a wall.
Cook-Searson said the level of violence is rare, yet she is calling for the community to be united in making the reserve safer.
“It’s really sad when an innocent boy is hurt in the fire [shooting]. There were other children in the house at that time. We’re grateful the little boy is recovering right now. We have to keep them in our prayers,” Cook-Searson said. “It’s something we’re going to be dealing with. We have been having community-safety meetings now for a year and a half.”
Cook-Searson says she has spoken with the parents and visited the child saying the family is in shock.
The First Nation is set to host a provincial street gang strategy workshop next week.
Cook-Searson is urging people with information to speak to the police adding the community needs help.
RCMP say no arrests have been made.
