The La Ronge area now has less K-9’s and felines as more than 130 cats and dogs were given to an Alberta animal rescue group for adoption in that province.

The Saving Grace Animal Society was in La Ronge Saturday, on the invite of the tri-community area to collect 110 dogs and 26 cats.

“The community actually reached out to us in regards to the overpopulation crisis they are facing in the community and just ask if we could come in and do kind of a roundup, in regards to removing any dogs that were loose, not on people’s property’s or in their homes,” explained Saving Grace Animal Society Executive Director Erin Deems.

The animals are adopted throughout Alberta, not Saskatchewan, as Deems say our neighbours to the west has greater population to handle the influx of animals.

“They’re all brought back to Alberta and dispersed to other reputable rescue groups within our province. They are fully vetted, spayed, neutered, micro-chipped, vaccinated and de-wormed and then they are adopted out,” said Deems.

Deems says there is usually good community buy-in to the Society’s adoption program, as residents know well in advance of opportunities to give away unwanted animals.

Deems predicts they will make six trips to Saskatchewan this year for rescue missions.
