RCMP are looking into the actions of officers following the death of an 43-year-old Onion Lake Cree Nation man Monday.

Mounties say they identified the male suspect Saturday, following an assault complaint on the First Nation.

Officers claim they observed the man was holding a firearm.

While they were engaging with the individual, the suspect discharged his firearm and was injured by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was declared deceased on the scene.

The officers say they did not discharge their firearms during this incident.

The incident must be investigated as per RCMP policy.

The man’s name is not being released.
