Residents of Île-à-la-Crosse now have access to high speed internet, with more upgrades on the way.

Jansen Corrigal is the general manager of Île-à-la-Crosse Communications Society Inc., which has been providing cable television to the community since 2001.

Corrigal says with so many people moving away from regular cable providers, change for the future was needed. The high speed internet service was launched in March and uses the existing infrastructure already in place.

“With the equipment we have right now, we can offer customers up to 50 megabits per second, we’re currently at 10, so we have some room to expand,” said Corrigal.

Corrigal says the new service required upgrading some equipment, as well as purchasing some new components.

He says the next plan for the future is to offer wireless internet to customers in the surrounding area.

“Once we build this tower, we’ll be able to offer wireless service, so we can access those customers who live a little ways out of town,” said Corrigal.

Corrigal says the wireless service will be able to serve cabins, resorts and the campground in the summer.
