Nearly two months into the school year and a teacher shortage in the north continues.

At the start of the year the Northern Lights School Division stated there was a need for approximately 14 educators for vacancies in La Ronge, Pinehouse Lake, La Loche, Stony Rapids and Sandy Bay.

Jason Young, Director of Education says recruiting has decreased the need from 14 teachers to nine.

“They’re [resumes] trickling in for sure and we have folks who are inquiring about us. They are trickling in, so we’re grateful to at least see some of those resumes coming in,” Young said.

Young says the School Division is in talks with the province about finding solutions, but would not elaborate on possible remedies.

Young concedes staff morale is being affected. “It’s does affect staff morale, there’s no question, but I appreciate the resiliency of  the staff to stay professional at this difficult time. We’re very grateful for their approach in spite of all the challenges that we are facing,” Young stated.
