Northern Saskatchewan MP Georgina Jolibois released a statement on Saturday afternoon about the tornado that swept through much of the Ottawa-area and western Quebec on Friday.

The Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River MP is in Ottawa and says her office has received a number of phone calls regarding her safety.

She says she wants to assure people in northern Saskatchewan that both she and her Ottawa staff are safe.

The tornado swept through the national-capital region on Friday night causing extensive damage to infrastructure, injuring a number of people and sending a handful to local hospitals.

As many as 100,000 people in the Ottawa-area are still without power and Ontario Hydro is calling the damage done to the electrical grid worse than what occurred during the 1998 ice storm that ravaged much of the city.

Some of the hardest hit areas include Dunrobin, Merivale and Gatineau, Quebec.
