The Town of Nipawin and Cumberland House Cree Nation are in the process of signing a new communication and co-operation protocol agreement.

“It’s really just intended to formalize an understanding between the two communities that we recognize the benefits in supporting each other and working together on economic initiatives primarily,” Nipawin’s chief administrative officer Barry Elliott says.

The official signing ceremony was scheduled to be held at the Evergreen Centre in Nipawin on Sept. 18 but had to be postponed.

“There’s certainly an interest from Cumberland House in being involved in economic development activities throughout the region, but primarily in the town of Nipawin. They have a lot of Cree Nation members who live or frequent the town of Nipawin. We are not that far away.,” Elliott explains.

A new signing ceremony date has not yet been set.

Elliott says he expects the rescheduled signing ceremony will still be held at Nipawin’s Evergreen Centre.
