All of this week, the Lac La Ronge Indian Band is hosting community meetings to gather ideas from the membership on shaping the Election Act.

“The purpose of the amendments to ensure there is consistency between the Election Act and any other regulations, codes or policies that the band either has in place or will have in place,” said lawyer Leah Mach.

Mach stresses that the First Nation has not developed any proposed changes at this point and is on a fact-finding mission, totally driven by the membership.

The First Nation has conducted early consultations in the urban centres. She says some new ideas would see the creation of an urban councillor and greater transparency from leadership.

“The biggest concerns that I’m hearing are, members are looking for communication and transparency from chief and council,” Mach said.

The First Nation is expected to draft proposed amendments from the input gathered and present through further consultations in the new year, ahead of the chief and council election in 2019.
