La Ronge Ice Wolves netminder Jordan Frey is currently in Swift Current, battling for a spot on the Broncos roster.

“About a month ago, Dean Brockman – the head coach — called me and told me that they had a goalie drop out, and they had an open spot at camp if I wanted to go,” said Frey.

“I didn’t want to waste this opportunity, so I thought it would be a really good idea for me to come out here and get some ice. If I stick up here — then I stick, if I don’t — then I get some experience coming back up to La Ronge.”

Frey, a Saskatoon product, is heading into his 18-year-old season. He appeared in 28 games with the Ice Wolves during the 2017-18 campaign and faced over 1000 shots. Frey says if he ends up back in La Ronge, he is aiming to be the starting goalie.

“Anytime you’re going to play with a team, you want to play the majority of the games — regardless if it’s your first year or fourth year,” said Frey. “So I think this year for me, I want to take over the starter role and lead our team towards playoffs.”

Frey is a multi-sport athlete. He won a Midget AAA provincial baseball championship this year with the Saskatoon Cubs. The Cubs finished with a 2-3 record at nationals in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Meantime, the La Ronge Ice Wolves are slated to open training camp on Friday.
