Reconciliation is the focus of a new framework agreement between the federal government and Métis Nation-Saskatchewan.

Métis officials say the document also brings them closer to federal recognition of Métis land, resources, education and governance rights under Section 35 of the Canadian Constitution.

Métis National Council President Clem Chartier says for the first time the federal government has recognized the Metis as a distinct nation.

This includes $1.5 billion over 10 years in new federal dollars for Métis peoples.

The signing, between MN-S President Glen McCallum and Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Carolyn Bennett, took place Friday morning at the Back to Batoche Festival.

The MN-S also signed memorandums of understanding with the Saskatchewan School Boards Association and Saskatchewan Health Authority.

The SSBA MOU seeks to incorporate Métis culture, traditions and ways of knowing into educational institutions.

The SHA MOU seeks to improve Métis health by tracking health determinants and supporting efforts to access funds for new programs and research.

The MN-S and federal government signed a housing accord in Saskatoon on Thursday.
