An evacuation order is now in effect for the northern Saskatchewan community of Southend.

The government says 600-800 residents are being affected.

The local emergency evacuation was declared Tuesday afternoon as a result of smoky conditions.

There are also concerns over road access into community.

The lightning caused wildfire is burning 11 kilometers southwest of the community and is estimated to be 1000 hectares in size.

Teena Clarke, Health Director for the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation in Southend says this is a mandatory evacuation with all residents encouraged to leave. “This is a Manditory Evacuation – General Evacuation – All are encouraged to leave for safety – but if you decide to stay, it is your decision and that’s why we ask you sign a waiver form. If worse comes, you will be forced to leave – this is serious and safety for community members. Message from Evacuation team.”

A helicopter, air tanker and ground crews are battling the blaze.

Residents are being evacuated to both Prince Albert and Saskatoon.

In Prince Albert, registration will begin at Saskatchewan Polytechnic beginning at 9 a.m.

In Saskatoon, evacuees will go to the Hank Ruys Soccer Centre.
