Northern mines picked up several prizes this weekend at the 50th annual Emergency Response Mine Rescue Skills Competition.

The event was held on Saturday in Moose Jaw, with 16 mines from across Saskatchewan represented.

The competition is divided into five events. The categories include firefighting, first aid, proficiency skills, practical skills and simulated mine problems.

In the first aid category, the runner-up was SSR Mining Seabee. For firefighting surface, the runner-up was Orano McClean Lake. For proficiency, the surface winner was Orano McClean Lake. In the underground mine problem category, the runner-up was SSR Mining Seabee.

At the awards ceremony, Cameco Cigar Lake Mine received the 2017 John T. Ryan Regional Safety Trophy in the metal mine category for Prairie provinces and territories.
