A fire ban in the Prince Albert National Park is expected to be lifted Friday.
The ban has been in place since the middle of May due to the 36,000 hectare Rabbit Creek fire burning in the park.
However, Incident Commander Jed Cochrane, says firefighters now believe they are moving toward getting the blaze under control.
“Our current forecast for the fire is being held, which means that with the resources we have on the fire and the weather forecast that we can see — we don’t anticipate the fire to grow any further,” he says.
The fire has not grown in size since May 21 and firefighters say they have been aided by cooler temperatures and rainy weather.
As a result, all trails and campgrounds on Highway 263, Northshore Road to Kingsmere Lake and the Hanging Heart and Crean lakes have been reopened in the past few days.
It is also expected the Narrows Road and all trails and campgrounds in this area will reopen Friday.
The Hunters Lake Trail and Cookson Road from the south boundary of the park by Cookson Pasture to Mayview Road remains closed.
The Rabbit Creek Fire has been burning since May 6 after a controlled burn, which had been started a few days before, went awry.
