The Northern Saskatchewan Trappers Association has wrapped up its annual convention at the JRMCC in La Ronge.

The event began on Wednesday with Youth Day, which included information sessions and display tables featuring traps, snares and other tools of the trade. The students were also taught how to smoke fish and meat outdoors over wood fires.

On Thursday, elections were held and Adam O. Charles of Stanley Mission was re-elected as president.

Jarret Nelson of Montreal Lake was elected to the position of vice-president.

Nelson says it is important to learn from the elders and get a new generation of youth involved in traditional activities like trapping. He would also like to see the NSTA more involved with the issues impacting fur harvesters.

“Getting an opportunity to sit not only with corporate industry like Cameco and Areva, but we also have the other mines that are trying to develop in the Lac La Ronge area,” he said.

Nelson says he would also like to see NSTA representatives allowed to sit with local chief and councils to discuss issues affecting trappers in the north.
