Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde has been named a recipient of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit.

Bellegarde will be invested, along with five other people at a ceremony in Regina next month.

He has spent his life advancing First Nations self-determination and establishing a new relationship between First Nations, the Crown and non-Indigenous Canadians.

In 1984, he became the first treaty Indian to graduate from the University of Regina with a Bachelor of Administration.

Bellegarde served three terms as chief of the FSIN and became the AFN head chief in 2014.

The Saskatchewan Order of Merit was established in 1985 to recognize excellence and achievements from outstanding citizens.
