Despite tough economic times, Cameco has unveiled $50,000 in scholarships for northern students.

Cameco announced the formation of a new scholarship devoted to northern students at an event in Ile a la Crosse this morning.

The uranium company’s Northern Saskatchewan Scholarship will be available to students across the North and offers up to $5,000 per student seeking an education and can be renewed for up to four terms.

A total of $50,000 will be available to students in 2018 and the deadline to apply is in July.

Over the past year, Cameco has reported several financial losses.

In January, the uranium company temporarily shut down its operations in Key Lake and Mcarthur River leaving nearly 800 people without work for the next year.

Cameco CEO Tim Gitzel says despite tough economic times they want to remain committed to their northern partners and help the success of northern youth.

Ile a la Crosse mayor Duane Favel now hopes northern students will take advantage of these opportunities for furthered education.

With this latest scholarship, a total of over $200,000 is available in Cameco scholarships for students in the fall semester.
