A new Treaty Commissioner has been named for Saskatchewan.

On Wednesday afternoon Indigenous Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett along with the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations announced that Mary Culbertson would be taking over the position.

Culbertson is a lawyer from Keeseekoose First Nation who has spent over twenty years working with provincial and federal governments as well as Indigenous organizations.

She is the first person from her community to receive a Juris Doctor of Law and has been an actrive volunteer in several community organizations and advocacy groups across the province.

The goal of the Treaty Commissioner is to promote respect and understanding of the treaties.

Culbertson will serve in this role for the next three years.
