Post-secondary students are volunteering their time to make North Central Regina a better community.
They are part of a program called SEARCH, where they volunteer their time to work alongside professionals at a health clinic in the neighbourhood.
SEARCH is short for student energy in action for Regina community health. The students come away from the program with a greater understanding of the needs of North Central. At the same time, they are part of the plan to improve healthcare. Clients enjoy a welcoming environment, healthy meals, as well as cultural and educational programming.
Executive director, Kelly Husack, says trust and relationships are built.
“And by doing so, we are hopefully creating a more empathetic, more socially responsible healthcare profession as they go on and graduate,” she said.
Before becoming executive director, Husack was a volunteer for the program. She says she got a lot out of that, and at the same time, was able to give back to the community.
“I really enjoyed working with the community and learning more, gaining that hands-on experience and developing my skills,” she said. “Volunteering was a way for me to be involved, and putting my time towards something that I am really passionate about, and that is community health.”
SEARCH is holding its annual fundraising gala in Regina tonight. It’s their biggest fundraising event of the year. Tickets are still available.
