The Prince Albert Grand Council will select a new leader following a vote at the council’s annual assembly today.

Polls will open at 10:00 a.m. for delegates of the 12 First Nations under the council. After voting ends at noon, the new grand chief will be announced in the Senator Allen Bird Memorial Centre.

The assembly began yesterday with a drum performance from Fond du Lac and Sturgeon Lake, which was followed by speeches and words of advice from Indigenous leaders across the province.

“Each individual (voter) must make up their mind if a candidate is there for the right reasons. If a candidate has some good things to offer to the communities, and that a candidate is strong and vocal,” said FSIN Chief, Bobby Cameron.

“(For leaders) I think knowing how to deal with people is the main thing,” said Grand Chief, Ron Michel. “And also working for the chiefs, they are the ones that call the shots.”

Grand Chief Michel has held the position since 2005. His successor should be known sometime this afternoon.
