About a dozen people, carrying banners reading “Indigenous lives matter,” staged a march on the road in front of the Regina Correctional Centre this morning.

It was to let the inmates know that people still care. One of the marchers was Sherri Meyer. Her fiancé has been on remand since April. She says the conditions he lives under are extremely difficult as he awaits trial.

“It is not club fed in there,” she said. “Remand is even worse. I mean, the guys in there, they are locked up 21 hours a day and they just sit there. There is a lot of down time. People should realize it’s not a walk in the park like everyone thinks it is.”

The event, sponsored by the Saskatchewan Coalition Against Racism, is part of Prisoners’ Justice Day. A day set aside to remember inmates who have experienced abuse, violence, suicide and even murder while incarcerated.

The vast majority of inmates at the Regina Correctional Centre are Aboriginal.
