An external agency is now investigating an incident on Deschambault Lake reserve where a man was shot during a gunfight with an RCMP officer.

This all occurred on Sunday when RCMP officers were responding to a series of calls about gunshots being fired on the reserve. During the response, an RCMP officer fired his weapon.

The RCMP is not commenting on whether the adult male who received “what is believed to be a gunshot wound” was the suspect who was reportedly firing off shots, nor are they saying if the wound was caused by an officer. The RCMP is not releasing the age of the man shot, and are not commenting on whether charges have been laid.

RCMP policy has led the force to ask the Saskatoon Police to conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances of the incident, and the Ministry of Justice has been asked to appoint an independent observer.

The officer involved in the incident “has been assigned to administrative duties” for the time being, the RCMP says in a news release.
